Istmo fosters a community dedicated to environmental responsibility, crafting products like shirts from recycled materials such as plastic bottles. Through strategic partnerships, Istmo encourages businesses to embrace eco-friendly practices while also spearheading projects like Waste Revolution Foundation’s recycling stations. By repurposing materials, Istmo cultivates partnerships that guide Panama’s businesses towards sustainability, signaling a shift towards a greener future through transformative change.
In all your projects, the concept of a “responsible human” stands out. How would you define it?
Any individual aspiring to make a positive impact is deemed a responsible human. Responsibility transcends mere actions, encompassing everyday choices like consuming consciously and investing in ethical products, coupled with maintaining a positive attitude and a willingness to help others whenever possible. A responsible human continually strives to establish a cycle of benevolent deeds, inspiring others to follow suit, thereby perpetuating a virtuous cycle of goodness.
In your opinion and experience, can we be responsible humans and, with this understanding, responsible designers and architects?
Finding a balance between economic, social, and environmental factors is crucial in architectural endeavors. Many architects approach this challenge with a desire to engage communities actively. It’s imperative to implement architecture that not only serves the community but also supports its development and well-being, while being mindful of local tendencies and utilizing materials that have a minimal environmental footprint.
How do you envision the “responsible” or sustainable movement in Panama?
We are at our peak; we are waking up. The youth, the future, is demanding sustainable solutions, and the answer lies in collaboration. There is an imminent awakening to the power of working together towards a common and sustainable goal.
The Revolution Fest is just around the corner! What has your experience been like planning this event, and how do you maintain and highlight sustainability in it?
By calculating carbon footprints, installing solar panels to aid in energy generation, and conducting workshops on mindful recycling, we actively contribute to building a sustainable future during this event. Amidst the festivities, it remains crucial to emphasize the true essence of these celebrations – fostering awareness and proactive steps towards sustainability.
